An introspective on what I want Sticks & Scribbles to be.

Right now it seems as if there could be nothing more wonderful than finally being able to sit outside on the deck and write. Finally, Duluth has had a sunny, dry, and warm (enough) day. Birds sing in my backyard, I can hear a flock of canadian geese honking by, and across my yard, seedlings sprout and grow in my garden. The picture that accompanies this post is from a few evenings ago. We grilled after work, and I enjoyed a bottle of Oatmeal Stout from Lake Superior Brewing, one of the local craft brewers in Duluth. The notebook in the picture is the blog notebook I started, so I can write down ideas and rough drafts by hand first. Writing by hand is important to my writing process. I’m not sure why it is, but when I crave to write, the scratch of pen on paper is what I crave. So I do it.

I have been thinking a lot about my goals for this blog, my Etsy shops, and my personal business that the blog and shops are intended to be a part of. I have wavered a lot on the focus of this blog, whether it should be crafts, knitting only, personal, writing, and others, but I have finally come to the conclusion that it should be all of those things, and that the more I write, the more it will take on its own personality. I also want it to support my various endeavors, but I don’t want to boil it down and focus it so much that it is only built to sell things in my Etsy shops.

I have a lot of ideas both for the blog and for other things I want to accomplish, and some are probably better than others. Working around a full time job, it is hard to know where to focus my efforts. One day, I will feel like pumping out some armwarmers to sell this fall, another I will dive into my current writing project, and the next, I’ll get inspired to knit something new and be itching to get to Yarn Harbor for some yarn. Many nights, I will just come home and knit while I watch TV shows online, and tell myself that at least I’m being productive by knitting something. Other nights, after dinner and a walk around the block with the dog, I will head to the coffee shop for a latte, a biscotti, and write for at least an hour. When I get tired and go home, I make sure to congratulate myself that I wrote for an hour, instead of bashing myself for only writing for an hour.

All of this is to say that, my blog is meant to encompass everything I want it to. Crafts and writing are up there as a main focus, but I also associate that with handmade, sustainability, local, and DIY, which then includes my garden, and other topics. My goal is to be a creative entrepreneur, however small I start. For it to work, and for it to be what I want it to be, I have to do it my way, and figure out what works for me! That includes allowing this blog to encompass everything I want it to, instead of narrowing the focus and only writing about one topic. Now, hopefully this declaration will help me get past the slump I’ve been in lately!
